 Good Happens - Razoo
Come together · Change your world. By Scott Overdyke

For better or worse, very few of us current RPCVs are involved in online social networking - a trend considered by many of us to be intrusive, overwhelming, or just plain irrelevant.

And it's true - most of the hype around Facebook and MySpace is just that - hype.  But in the midst of all that noise, one company is seeking to apply some advanced social networking concepts to the very same social justice and environmental causes that we pursued during our time in Panama.  That company is www.Razoo.com
.

PCPF Group at www.razoo.comHelp PCPF Win $10,000

Razoo.com has just launched its $10,000 Change Your World Contest and Peace Corps Panama Friends needs your help to win!

If PCPF recruits 100 members by September 15th, we will be entered into the contest. We have started with 11 at the end of August.

Help us win this contest and come learn more about Peace Corps Panama Friends by joining our group on Razoo.

How, you ask . . .
  • Go to www.Razoo.com, click on "Join our community".
  • Once you receive your confirming email and are in Razoo, search for "PCPF" or go to the Peace Corps Panama Friends group.
  • Click on Join This Group.
If we win, the $10,000 goes to PCPF projects and programs in Panama.

Northern California PCPF Happy Hour

Five Panama RPCV's in Northern Volunteer went down to the Mission in San Francisco to enjoy drinks and share stories.  Many people who wanted to attend could not make it.

PCPF Northern California PCPF Treasurer Justin Mortensen, who is in graduate school at Berkeley, reports that the PCPF NorCal group  will have informal happy hours over the next few months.  They plan a big celebration with Panamanian food and music on November 3rd.

PCPF NorCal has started a Google group with 14 members,   The group's page is:  http://groups.google.com/group/pcpfnorcal

If anyone wants to join, they can email Justin directly at justin.mortensen[AT]gmail.com.

PCPF July Happy Hour in DC

In July, the PCPF Directiva organized a Happy Hour in our nation's capital to get to know our fellow RPCVs around town. New faces joined with old friends around pitchers of Sangria and plates of Paella. In true DC style, the group networked and got a chance to ask . . . "so where do you work." A few Panama toilet stories where also told in good Peace Corps fashion.

 PCPF-Supported Projects
By Sarah Schmidt

PCPF DonationPCPF, through you, contributes to all Peace Corps Partnership Panama projects. Thank you for your continued support!

We currently have $2118 of donations.  Our goal is $5,000.

Click button to donate $10 or more to PCPF:

Your donations sponsor 30% (up to $500) of funds needed by Panama volunteers. Here are some of the projects your money has recently gone to:
  • Rice Peeling Machine

    E. Jones of Oregon who is working with a local cooperative, "El Despertar Campesino," (the awakening of the peasants), in northern Veraguas to acquire a rice peeler to improve productivity.

The rice peeler will sit atop a 4x4 truck that will visit local communities on a regular basis, offering affordable rice pealing.
This service will improve the quality of lives of local families, as well as providing an additional income stream to the cooperative.
  • Turtle Conservation Hatchery
    A. Orthmeyer of Minnesota is working with the community of Los Pocitos on a turtle hatchery project.

Turtle Conservation HatcheryThe hatchery is too small to safely hold the amount of nests recovered during a season. If sea turtle eggs are exposed to the eggshells of hatched sea turtles, they can become infected with fatal bacteria.

Overcrowding and not moving the hatchery to a different location from year to year increases the risk of bacterial contamination. Constructing a larger, portable hatchery will decrease the risk of exposure to potentially fatal bacteria. Additional space will allow for more nests to be collected, thereby reducing the amount of poaching and predation to sea turtle nests that would otherwise remain vulnerable.

Protection from land animals and birds will be achieved by using more sturdy materials, and installing a roof. A lock will protect against any possible human intruders to the hatchery.

  • Pit Latrines - Cerro Brisa

    B. Trainor of New Jersey who is working on a pit latrine project in the "Comarca Ngäbe-Bugle" in the province of Chiriqui.

The latrine and human-waste situation in Cerro Brisa is dire, and many latrines of this 8% are in various states of disrepair and barely usable while others, near full, have a maximum of 1-2 years of use time left before overflowing. The completion of this project will provide an alternative to this hazardous situation, providing 42% of the Cerro Brisa population a ready alternative to "using the jungle," and encouraging the increased sanitation of local water sources.

Additionally, as the project was and continues to be driven by community initiative, it is expected that there should be no problem with the beneficiary population using their new latrines in a correct, effective manner.

Sarah works for an international development firm, DAI, and Alberto works at the Organization of American States (OAS).

In the second quarter of 2007 PCPF sent over $3,775 to Panama to support volunteers.
  • $2,400 initially raised through 2007 calendar sales went to the super-small grant program administered by the Volunteer Action Committee (VAC).
  • Over $1,375 was sent to support three Peace Corps Partnership projects.  The projects supported by these funds included the construction of pit latrines in Comarca Ngabe-Bugle for over 200 families; the construction of a portable sea turtle hatchery; and the purchase of a portable rice peeler for communities in Veraguas.
PCPF also:
